Best Facial Sunscreen

A good Sunscreen is the single most important product in our skincare routine so why do so few skincare brands actually get it right? If you’re sick of the thick, greasy sunscreens which break us out and stain our clothes then read on and lets get to the bottom of choosing the right sunscreen for your skincare routine.
Sunscreen protects our skin in two key ways, firstly it prevents burning which can cause discomfort and cell damage, secondly it protects against the damage of UVA radiation which ages our skin. Always look out for a factor 50 sunscreen which will give you the highest protection, but also check the UVA coverage to ensure its broad spectrum and fighting those ageing rays at the same time.
Now thats the boring scientific bits out of the way lets talk about what else to look out for to make sunscreen less of a chore and more of an enjoyable step in your skincare routine. Here are my top 5 tips:
1. Size really does matter.
Most sunscreens for the face come in 50ml tubes and if you are applying it correctly that will last you about 2-3 weeks. Nobody wants to be buying a sunscreen every fortnight so look for one in a 100ml+ size and just make your life a little easier.
2. Look for a stain free sunscreen
Its 2025, sunscreens should not be staining our clothes. The main culprit for staining is an ingredient called Avobenzone which is an old fashioned sunscreen ingredient, so look for a more modern formulation without it.
3. Fragrance free sunscreen
If you find that sunscreens irritate the eyes and make them water it's most likely caused by the amount of fragrance which brands put in their SPFs. Opt for a fragrance free sunscreen and your eyes will thank you.
4. Non greasy sunscreen
No one wants to wear sunscreen if it brings you out in spots, leaves a white cast or makes your make-up slide off. Look for one that's non-greasy and feels more like a moisturiser, especially if you have oily or acne prone skin.
5. The best face sunscreen is a long wear one
Lets be honest with ourselves, very few of us reapply sunscreen every 2 hours like most bottles say, so just switch to a long wear one and then you dont have to worry. Long wear sunscreens use modern photostable ingredients so they can provide that SPF 50+ protection for 6 or 8 hours.
Thankfully there are a few really good sunscreens which tick all these boxes, there is no gatekeeping here so let me share my favourites:
